There are two different component groups to consider when it comes to steering: first, the power-assist, and second, the actual parts that steer the vehicle.
The power-assist system consists of the power steering pump, rack-and-pinion or steering gear, hoses, fluid, and belt. These elements should be checked periodically, and the fluid should be replaced every 2 to 3 years to allow the system to keep functioning properly and to prevent any premature failure of components. The belt should be replaced as needed if any signs of excessive wear, such as cracks in the rubber, become apparent.
The steering system includes all the parts that interact to translate a movement at the steering wheel into a corresponding movement of the vehicle’s front wheels in the desired direction. These include the steering wheel and steering column, the rack-and pinion or steering gear, and the tie-rods. Since this system is also linked to the wheels, as is the suspension system, the steering system works in tandem with the vehicle’s suspension.
Excessive play in the steering components results in a less responsive and less precise control of the vehicle. Therefore, it is important to have the steering components inspected periodically to ensure optimal control. Our technicians can perform these checks and correct any problems to keep you driving safely.
